Benetech
   Jim Fruchtermann fonde en 2001 Benetech, une société de la Silicon Valley (Californie) ayant pour objectif de mettre les technologies au service de tous les êtres humains, et pas seulement de quelques-uns. Benetech prend la suite d’Arkenstone, une société spécialisée dans les appareils de lecture pour personnes aveugles. La première réalisation de Benetech est Bookshare.org, une grande bibliothèque numérique lancée en février 2002 à l’intention des personnes aveugles et malvoyantes résidant aux Etats-Unis (inscription payante). Benetech conçoit, développe et met en oeuvre des technologies novatrices au service du handicap, des droits humains, de l’alphabétisation, de l’éducation et de la fracture numérique. Pour tous ses projets, la société privilégie un retour sur investissement plus social que financier. Benetech propose notamment Route 66 Literacy, un logiciel de lecture pour l’alphabétisation des adultes, et Martus, un logiciel sécurisé permettant de recenser les atteintes aux droits de l’homme.
